The theme encourages action to challenge hatred, strengthen solidarity and champion compassion. The role played by institutions and individuals in supporting survivors, the long-reaching impact of the Holocaust on survivors’ families, and the impact of the Holocaust on the shaping of human rights policy and interventions will be explored. Holocaust commemorative and educational activities will draw attention to the actions taken by Holocaust survivors in the immediate years following the devastation and brutality of the Holocaust, to reclaim their rights, their history, their cultural heritage and traditions, and their dignity. Safeguarding the historical record, remembering the victims, challenging the distortion of history often expressed in contemporary antisemitism, are critical aspects of claiming justice after atrocity crimes. The writing of history and the act of remembering brings dignity and justice to those whom the perpetrators of the Holocaust intended to obliterate. Holocaust commemoration and education is a global imperative in the third decade of the 21st century. There is simply no place for such hatred in our country or anywhere else in the world, including online. Canada’s pledges include commitments to counter online antisemitism through the introduction of new legislation along with strengthening the Canada Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code. “Last fall, Canada also pledged to continue to fight antisemitism and hatred in all its forms and to defend human rights and inclusion at the Malmö International Forum on Holocaust Remembrance and Combating Antisemitism. As Canada’s representative at the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, Special Envoy Cotler will continue to vigorously promote Holocaust remembrance and research, as well as the international adoption of the IHRA’s working definition of antisemitism. “In November 2021, Canada renewed the position of special envoy on preserving Holocaust remembrance and combatting antisemitism and reappointed Irwin Cotler to continue serving in this vital role. We also remember the innumerable Roma and Sinti, LGBTQ2+ persons, persons with disabilities and dissidents who were persecuted and killed by the Nazis and their collaborators in horrific crimes against humanity. “On this day, we remember the more than 6 million Jewish children, women and men who were murdered during the Holocaust. The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement: JanuOttawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada
